Medicinal Mushrooms for Health and Wellness

An introduction to the magic of mushrooms

Mushroom Medicine

Here in the Sierra Nevada Foothills, the rainy season is long awaited and celebrated for many reasons. It is the end of “fire season”, the beginning of wonderful hiking weather and for many people, the beginning of mushroom season!  Mushrooms are getting a lot of attention these days as researchers continue to uncover their incredible properties.  We’d like to introduce you to Medicinal Mushrooms for health and wellness so that you can begin to learn about their seemingly magical healing benefits for human and environmental health.

Environmental benefits

Mushroom mycelia is sometimes called the “internet of the forest” by serving as a vast underground communication system by which trees communicate with one another. This same mycelia is able to digest toxins in the environment and serve as material for insulation, leather substitutes, and more.

Medicinal Mushrooms for Health and Wellness

Compounds in mushrooms continue to amaze medical researchers. For example, Hericium erinaceus, or “Lion’s Mane”, has been studied extensively for its neurohealth properties and has been shown to trigger neurite outgrowth and regeneration of damaged nerves. You can actually spot Lion’s Mane growing on oak trees here locally here in the Foothills (we do not recommend that you harvest and consume wild mushrooms unless you are properly trained to identify them). There is incredible potential for treatment and prevention of neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, as well as numerous digestive ailments. Lion’s Mane is the main ingredient in MycoRev Neuro, part of the Aduko product line  we carry at Healing Hands Wellness Center. Other products include MycoRev Adapt, (with cordyceps), MycoRev Immune, (with Maitake, Reishi and Shitake) and MycoRev Tonic, (with Chaga, Lion’s Mane and Cordyceps).

If you haven’t already, I encourage you to learn more about the healing potential of mushrooms like Chaga, Cordyceps, Reishi and Lions Mane. An internet search of these and others, including Turkey Tail (proven to help treat breast cancer) will start you down a most magical journey of discovery!

To delve deeper into the magical world of fungi, the documentary “Fantastic Fungi” is beautifully filmed, well researched and very thought provoking.
